Youth Swimming
The PCAS adaptive swim team for youths with permanent physical or visual impairments practices at a pool in West Chester from November through April.
We offer a competitive team as well as a development team. The competitive team will train to compete at various adaptive swim meets. The development team will improve their skills and many will eventually join the competitive team.
Some of our participants have gone on to compete at the Junior Nationals, both individually and as relay teams, in addition to competing in triathlons. We’ve even had a swimmer compete at an international level!
If you are not yet a competitive swimmer, and want to learn how to swim better, you can apply to join the developmental team.
Following is a list of essential eligibility criteria to join either of our teams:
Be between the ages of 8-23 years of age.
Have a permanent physical or visual impairment that would make you eligible for the Paralympics.
Be able to respond quickly to statements and instructions to avoid unsafe situations and to understand and follow instructions.
Be able to participate in the program activities with minimal to no behavioral disruption of the practice.
Be able to engage in self-directed activities, and follow multi step instructions without 1:1 supervision. (Guides for athletes with visual impairments will be provided.)
Be able to swim one length of the pool (25 yards) independently and safely without assistance or floatation devices.
